Russian Manicure Guide
The dry, e-file technique behind a cleaner cuticle line and 3 to 4 week wear, one of the few studios in the city offering it. Here's what makes it different, what to expect, and what it costs.
What Makes It Different
A Russian manicure skips the soak. Instead of softening the cuticle in water, a technician works completely dry, using a professional electric file with fine diamond and carbide bits to lift and remove only the dead, invisible tissue bonded to the nail plate (called pterygium), never the living skin around it.
Because the skin is never softened or swollen with water, a trained technician can actually see what needs to be removed, instead of guessing at what a soak has temporarily hidden. The result is a noticeably closer, cleaner cuticle line and a nail bed that's better prepped for polish or gel, which is also why the finish holds up longer.
In plain terms: it's the difference between trimming what you can see versus what a soak lets you guess at. Both approaches are valid manicures, this one is simply a different, more exacting technique.
Why It's Worth Seeking Out
True Russian manicure, the dry e-file technique and not just a cuticle trim with a different name on the price list, is a specialist skill. It takes real training to perform safely, which is exactly why it's still uncommon across Makati and BGC nail salons: in a survey of a dozen salons across both areas, only a small handful offered it at all.
- Longer wear. Thorough dry cuticle work removes the tissue that usually causes early lifting, so results commonly last 3 to 4 weeks, noticeably longer than a standard gel manicure.
- A cleaner finish. Working dry means the technician can see exactly what's being removed, for a closer, more precise cuticle line.
- Better for fast-growing or dense cuticles. If your cuticles grow back quickly or feel thick, the extra precision holds up better between visits.
What to Expect at AyuriNails
Our technicians are trained specifically in the dry e-file method: this isn't a standard manicure with an add-on name. Each session includes:
- Sanitizing and an assessment of your nail and cuticle condition
- Dry removal of dead cuticle tissue using precision e-file bits, working only on non-living tissue
- Shaping and refining the nail edge
- Cuticle oil finish (and gel/polish application, for the full Manicure or Pedicure service)
Is it painful?
No, done correctly, it shouldn't be. The e-file should only ever contact dead tissue, never living skin. Any heat, stinging, or bleeding is a sign something's being done wrong, which is exactly why training and a steady hand matter more here than in a standard manicure.
Who it's best for
Great for anyone who wants their manicure or pedicure to genuinely last, or who deals with fast-growing, dense, or overgrown cuticles. If you have a nail fungal infection, broken skin, or a circulation condition, let your technician know beforehand or check with a doctor first.
Add-on: Hard Gel Overlay
Natural nails don't always grow perfectly straight or evenly shaped. For an extra ₱1,000, we can apply a hard gel overlay on top of your Russian Manicure or Pedicure, a thin, durable gel layer that lets your technician correct and even out the nail shape for a cleaner, more uniform result, while still protecting and strengthening the nail underneath.
Before & After
The dry e-file technique isn't just a claim, it shows in the cuticle line itself. Here's what changes in a single session.
Hands: before, the cuticles are ragged and overgrown onto the nail plate, with uneven, bitten-down edges. After, the dry e-file work has cleared that tissue back to a smooth, even line, the nail edges are uniform, and the close cuticle line lets the glossy finish sit flush against the skin instead of catching on it.
Feet: before, the cuticles sit thick and uneven across the toenails, with rough edges. After, the same dry technique leaves a clean, closer cuticle line, letting the French-tip finish sit crisp and even across every nail.
